Have you ever wondered which category your hair fits into, hair types have 4 major categories, straight hair (type 1), wavy hair (type 2) curly hair (type 3) and coily hair (type 4). Within those four categories are three subcategories, for example 2a, 2b, and 2c, the letters indicate the texture of your hair, fine (type A), medium (type B) and coarse (type c), in other words, loose, curly, and thick.
I’ve been asked, why do some people have curly to coily hair and others straight, well genetic, and environmental factors influence hair texture and thickness in people of different racial backgrounds. The curved shapes of Afro Caribbean textured hair was likely to evolve for protection against the intense sun light and scalp cooling from hot climates. Curls also retain moisture for a longer period, which is beneficial in very hot climates. The curl pattern makes it harder for the oils from the scalp to travel down the strand.
Knowing your hair type allows you to properly care for your hair, some hair types require ingredients that provide intense hydration and nourishment to prevent breakage, especially during styling. You can also save money, time, and worry because you know which products will help you achieve the look, style, and hair health you are looking for.
